Day trips from Marseille — what's realistic?

Easy half-day: Cassis (35 min) is close enough for a morning trip, leaving the afternoon for the Calanques or Marseille itself.

Perfect full day: Aix-en-Provence (40 min) pairs brilliantly with a Calanques boat trip if you do Aix in the morning. Arles (1h) deserves at least 4 hours in town for the Roman arena and Espace Van Gogh.

Long but feasible: Avignon (1h) is a full day's drive plus sightseeing — the Palais des Papes alone is 2 hours. The Verdon Gorge (2h) is spectacular but the drive and the gorge hike make it a genuinely long day — start before 8am.

Multi-interest combo: Luberon villages + lavender (mid-June–mid-July) combines Gordes, Sénanque Abbey and Valensole into one scenic loop, about 2.5–3 hours of total driving.
