What are the Calanques?
The Calanques are a 20 km stretch of dramatic limestone fjords east of Marseille, protected as a national park since 2012. From EN-Vau (accessible only by boat or a 3-hour return hike) to Port-Miou (walkable from Cassis in 20 minutes), each calanque has different access requirements.
Summer fire-risk closures — the honest picture
Each year from around July 1st to August 31st, the prefecture issues mass closure of all Calanques hiking trails due to fire risk. The closure applies to all trails, all day, without exception. Rangers and police enforce it with fines. Boat trips and kayak rentals are unaffected — the closures apply only to foot access on land.
Fire closures can occasionally extend into late June or early September depending on conditions. Always check the prefecture website the day before your hike.
Sugiton reservation system
Calanque de Sugiton (closest to Marseille, 2h return from Luminy) operates a free reservation system during summer: you book a time slot online via the national park website. This applies June to September approximately. Outside this period no reservation is needed. Spaces fill weeks in advance — book early.
