Best time to visit Marseille
Pick a month to see weather, crowds, Calanques access, sea temperature and what's on. No month is bad — but each has trade-offs.
Marseille in a nutshell by season
Spring (Apr–May): the sweet spot — warm sun, wildflowers, Calanques fully open for hiking, sea still cool for swimming but pleasant for boat trips. Manageable crowds.
Summer (Jun–Aug): hot (30–35°C), very crowded, Calanques hiking restricted Jul–Aug due to fire risk — boat and kayak access remains open. Peak festival season (Festival de Marseille, Bastille Day fireworks). Book accommodation early.
Lavender (mid-Jun to mid-Jul): the Valensole plateau is 45 minutes north-east. Peak bloom around the last week of June into mid-July.
Autumn (Sep–Oct): arguably the best time — crowds fade, sea stays warm (22–24°C), Calanques reopen for hiking from September, golden light for photography. Some rain in October.
Winter (Nov–Mar): mild by French standards (10–15°C), very few tourists, cheap hotels, Calanques hiking excellent. The Mistral wind can be fierce Dec–Feb.
